Prisoner-Ross Greenwood- Crime

Jim Dalton is a prison warder and has pretty much seen it all in his time.

We are taken through the daily routines and the type of things that can

and do happen. Ross did this job and I admire him very much for putting

this on paper and for being a prison warden, not an easy job for anyone

from the sounds of things. Very much the unsung heroes. Although fiction

there is much based on fact and the authenticity of the daily routines.

I found this fascinating and very interesting. I’ve been in a prison - for

professional reasons I hasten to add (!!) and this puts the whole thing

in perspective which I feel would work for anyone. There's the gritty

realness of the twilight alternative world that is jail. Jim normally works

on the men's side which is where things kick off more regularly than

the womens but as a relative is in there he is transferred to the women’s

side for a while. He has his own problems at home. His wife doesnt

work- she looks after the two children and money is tight. Jim works

and in a way resents her being able to stay at home all day, whilst

his wife feels that she is in a prison of her own and wants to split.

Meanwhile Jim is learning how different things are in the female

side of the prison- the psychology is a completely different ball game.

A very interesting read which I loved and one to make you take a

step back, take a breath and perhaps ponder. A tale of human

emotions and how things may turn very quickly by your own

hand. Of losing control and trying to put the world to rights

in more than one way. A brilliant, well constructed very

different read. Loved it.

Prisoner Behind bars, the rules are different… Prison Officer Jim Dalton is used to walking the landings on the male side of HMP Peterborough. It’s a dangerous place, fuelled by testosterone-driven violence, but he’s done the job for a long time. He understands the unwritten rules, and he has the prisoners’ respect.  When a relative is sent to the jail, Dalton is transferred to the female side of the prison. His next shift is so easy, he can’t believe that the officers over there get paid the same wages. He sleeps well for the first time in years. But when he is assigned to the young offenders’ wing, dealing with female prisoners no longer seems so simple.  As every day passes, and he gets to know the women better, he is slowly drawn in to new temptations, new traps and a new nightmare. One which could destroy everything. Taking a break from his bestselling DI Barton series, Ross Greenwood returns with this shocking, page-turning and utterly compelling glimpse behind the bars of a women’s prison. From a man who walked the landings himself… Purchase Link - https://amzn.to/3atxS2x

Her last Holiday- C.L Taylor- Psychological thriller

"You come to Soul Shrink to be healed. You don’t expect to die“

One to play with your head and spin you around- perfect! Fran is on a retreat

at her mothers behest. The man running itTom Wade was let out of prison 9

months ago having been convicted of two deaths on one of his retreats in Gozo.

At the same time Fran’s sister Jenna went missing, presumed dead. Fran has

gone under an assumed name and her mother has insisted that the only way to

get to truth is to confront Tom and see his reaction when Jenna is mentioned.

On the first night there Fran receives a note addressed to her real name

informing her that Jenna didnt commit suicide as the police thought but

was murdered. Someone knows her real identity and more about Jenna.

This draws you in and keeps you there. A mystery as well as a thriller.

That air of suspense and whodunnit, brilliantly written as ever. My view

of whodunnit changed as I went through (and was totally wrong) something

I enjoy to keep the grey matter active. A suspenseful read right until the

very end. We get alternate chapters from Jenna and Kate (Tom's wife) in

the past at Gozo and various other characters in the present. Each chapter

is entitled with a name and time frame making this easy to follow.

Guru or charlatan, wife or employee, friend or foe?

A captivating gripping read to make you challenge everyone in the story.

Every little breath- Keri Beevis psychological thriller

OMG! Sit down and hold on to your seat! Casey was on her way to her boyfriend

Gareth’s house to call it all off. When she couldn't find him at home she went to

the house next doors that he and his father Steve were doing up. What she found

changed her life. Thirteen years later she has moved away and made a new start,

one of her jobs being a DJ for a local radio station having the late night slot.

When she gets strange messages and she is sure that someone has been into

her apartment she is rather unnerved. The DC whom she met on the original

case she has discovered, coincidentally, lives downstairs and Finn is keen to

protect Casey. Someone is out for revenge against Casey as if they blame her

for being the witness years ago. Why and who when things were so clearly

wrong and justice was served? Oh where to begin? (In a very good way) I

liked both Casey and Finn who both had well rounded characters. There is a

definite air of tension in this which builds and pops and then builds again-

just when you were expecting to find out something- bang- we head off in a

different direction leaving you thinking you had it in your grasp (whatever

“It” was) and then we are off in a different direction- or are we? I had most

of the characters as suspects as I really didn’t know who/what/why- the sign

to me of a very cleverly thought out plot, brilliant writing  and planning.

Keri we may need to have words about this! A twist and then some, and that

ending! OMG! Is there a sequel? Sign me up- PDQ!! Fast, clever, tense,

knicker-gripping!

Need I say more 5* and earned each and every one of them. Wow!

Murder On TIme- Roger Silverwood- Crime-

A new author to me and a very enjoyable read. Detective Inspector Michael

Angel has his hands full when a woman comes to the station saying her

husband has threatened to kill her and a local known criminal is at the heart

of some intenses heat. The woman is married to a well known producer who

lost his first wife to heart failure. He is about to go away to Ireland and she is

terrified that on his return she will meet her demise. However not fearful

enough that she can leave her TV career behind and go into hiding. There's

a muder or two, a breakout of a prisoner, a kidnap and much more in this

easy to read, comfortable book with characters you can easily take to.

Angel is a good old fashioned detective, married to his job but has the love

of his life at home and when Mary becomes involved he begins to see red.

A wonderful, easy read with a smile along the way. (Although number

27 in the series- this happily stand alone- I hadn't read any of the others)

MURDER ON TIME (Detective Angel #27) A DETECTIVE WHO’S NO ANGEL DESPITE HIS NAME. Discover a gripping series of murder mysteries set in south Yorkshire. Detective Inspector Michael Angel returns in Murder on Time, the twenty-seventh novel in Roger Silverwood’s bestselling series. MEET DETECTIVE INSPECTOR MICHAEL ANGEL. AN OLD-SCHOOL POLICEMAN WHO SOMETIMES RUBS HIS COLLEAGUES UP THE WRONG WAY. HE’S GOT HIS FLAWS, BUT HE NEVER GIVES UP ON A CASE. She was his leading lady, his wife, his everything. NOW HE WANTS HER DEAD. Late one night, hotshot director Miles Persimmon turns to Lisa Marie Gooden: the stunning young actress he married. ‘I have to murder you,’ he slurs, voice dripping with hatred and brandy. AN EMPTY THREAT — OR A CHILLING PROMISE? Lisa knows her husband. And he never goes back on his word. Her desperation leads her to Detective Angel’s door. Who can protect her if not the police? But Angel’s hands are tied. With no evidence, Lisa’s claims are impossible to prove — and easily shrugged off by her slippery husband. Yet Persimmon has a history of conveniently losing his wives. And in the most mysterious circumstances . . . Is the stage now set for a repeat performance? A BRILLIANTLY ABSORBING MYSTERY FULL OF TWISTS Perfect for fans of R.D. Wingfield, Colin Dexter, Peter Robinson, Reginald Hill, and Agatha Christie THE DETECTIVE Michael Angel is over fifty, married to Mary. They don’t have any children. They are a devoted couple but the relationship sometimes breaks down due to his job or due to the problems of Mary’s sister who lives in Edinburgh and imposes on their easy-going natures. Michael works at the small local police station and is devoted to defeating crime, murder, and dishonesty of any sort and has no personal ambition beyond being a good husband and a successful detective. He doesn’t want promotion with all the routine office work and stress that goes with it. He is incorruptible but always short of money. He is always at odds with his immediate chief, Detective Superintendent Horace Harker, who is lazy, a hypochondriac and not a bit interested in assisting Angel in serious police work. THE SETTING Bromersley is a market town at the bottom of the Pennines surrounded by stone and hawthorn-edged fields grazed by cattle and sheep. It is cold as anywhere in the winter but its closeness to the mountains protects it from many gales and heavy falls of snow. The town’s industry today includes the manufacture of ball bearings and whisky bottles, and a huge brewery produces Bromersley’s best bitter, which is considered the finest beer for miles around. Wednesday is market day, and the town centre is host to the frequent cries of stall-holders hawking their wares while the enticing smells of cheeses, coffees, foreign spices and fish and chips tempt your taste buds as you wander through the stalls. The police always find it difficult to catch pilferers and pickpockets in such a crowd. Bromersley folk are easy to befriend but many of the old people are stubborn and still buy their fruit and veg in pounds and ounces, not kilos and grams. PRAISE FOR ROGER SILVERWOOD “Solid plotting, unpretentious writing, thoroughly reliable entertainment.” Morning Star “A cast of characters you really want to populate with familiar faces of actors you see each week on TV — great fun.  I AM HERE TO KILL YOU by Chris Westlake -psychological thriller

A small welsh village has a new arrival, Sheena, only that's not her true

identity. She arrived due to something a friend pointed out about the

town. There is a women's group which she joins led by Rose for anyone

wanting to air their problems. Bernard is happily married for the

second time to a Thai bride Apinya. He used to employ Rose and so

knows her well, so when she feels out of sorts she turns to him for advice

when she leaves the group for a while. Meanwhile Sheena and Kat

have taken over and the group dynamics take rather a shift. when

everyone seems to be against each other and there is a murder,

what on earth has happened and why?. I enjoyed this, it takes a little

getting into to get to know each character and where they are

coming from in the plot. Each chapter is headed with a character

and timeline and its worth bearing with as it soon becomes clear.

A complicated web of plots, lies and deceit and of how the human

mind can be led astray. An enjoyable, mind activating read.

Mirrorland- Carole Johnstone-psychological thriller

One to keep you within the pages whilst spinning your mind right around.

El and Cat are identical twin sisters. Cat moved to the USA many years ago

when they grew apart. Now she has returned to Scotland as El is listed as

missing. She took a boat out and hasn't been seen since. Her husband

Ross was away at the time. Coming back to their old house dredges up

memories of their childhood. they have always said that they were

mirror images of each other- alike to look at but otherwise complete

opposites. There is no sight of El or the boat and Cat firmly believes

that she is still alive. Cat begins getting messages which relate to

treasure hunts she and El did as children in Mirrorland- a part of the old

house and they kept diaries of their adventures. We are taken back

through Cat finding clues and from the diary entries which have been

left for her to find. This is a very well described book that draws you in

with a palpable tension as it draws to a conclusion. I was reeling and

didn’t quite know what/who to think. The descriptions of Mirrorland

both now and when the twins were children is amazing- the skill

of a very talented writer-one that puts you right in the picture.

A clever concept, brilliantly executed. A wonderful, very different read.

Knife Edge by Kerry Buchanan- Crime

Nic has been kidnapped for 5 days. She was at a nightclub with some friends

and Colm and the two of them somehow got taken and are now in a derelict

house- she remembers nothing of how they were taken at all. She has various

cuts all over her body that her captor does daily. She manages to escape and

finds her way to a main road. When the police become involved it's clear that

this isn't the first time that this has happened and she finds that DI Ram has

a vested interest. When Nic’s sister Hazel becomes under threat Nic wants

to help the police all she can but also in her own way. Who is after her and

why? I took to this very quickly and found myself engrossed within the

pages. Nic is a likeable character and although does some perhaps irrational

things at times perhaps due to youth and inexperience, her heart is in the

right place. A thriller with lots of twists and turns and just when you think

someone is safe… I won’t spoil anything, lets just say you may end up

reading more / for longer than you intended! A well written, edge of

your seat thriller that I very much enjoyed.

Beyond This Broken Sky by Siobhan Curham historical fiction (WW2)

Set in two time lines from 1940 and 2019 onwards this tells the story of two

women. Ruby is in 1940 and has had a privileged upbringing never having

had to work. With war upon the country there is a need for help and she

and Joseph- someone who lives in the same house which is divided up into

flats) volunteer as ambulance drivers. Joseph is a conscientious objector

but feels helping the injured is a step forward. Ruby has been able to

drive for many years but come the ambulance test she is given a massive

lorry to drive. 2019 and Edi has moved into the top floor flat of her

new home having left her husband at long last. She bumps into Pearl

who lives downstairs and Pearl tells her that she is an author. Curiosity

gets the better of Edi and orders one of Pearls books which is about three

friends who share a house but there is murderous intent along the way.

When Edi accidentally finds a hidden army shirt in her loft with possible

blood stains and a bullet hole- could fiction really have been true?

I really enjoyed this. A different read with interesting characters

and I learnt a little more about the war years. Who knew that the

Savoy had its own shelter complete with a dance floor ,that in the

early war years the Eastend had fewer shelters and that vagrants

were not allowed in. A wonderful, very enjoyable informative read.
