The Promise of Tomorrow by Samantha Tonge
The Promise of Tomorrow by Samantha Tonge - women’s fiction
Written in Samantha's own beautifully relaxing style this tells the story of Elena and Rory. When Elena was ten, at Christmas her mother was in a RTA and seriously ill in hospital not expected to pull through. Elena crept out and made a promise to a stranger if her mother could be kept alive and since then has dreaded her thirtieth birthday which is now only a few weeks away. Because of this promise she has always been very cautious in everything she does. Rory is a colleague from work that is having some renovations done on his house and needs somewhere to stay whilst it's being done so comes to stay with Elena. Rory has daredevil hobbies and a come-what-may attitude, very different from his host which begins to rub off on her. This tells the story of Elena trying to make the last of those last few weeks before the big three-O and how Rory has a part in this.
Oh what a joy, what a delight. Samantha's books and characters have a habit of wrapping themselves around you like old friends and comfy slippers. I loved Rory from the beginning and would love him as a friend and neighbour along with Tahir! There’s a life affirming thread of getting that balance in life, not letting things get on top of us or holding us back whilst exercising some sensibility and moderation. An interesting twist which had me researching both online and my own life, I won’t spoil anything. Brilliant, stunning and all those other superlatives. One to leave you with a big smile.

The Promise of Tomorrow Elena Swan believes she’s going to die. And soon. She’s not ill. She’s not in imminent danger. But she is sure it’s going to happen. Because many years ago… she’d made a promise to a stranger, in the woods. Elena’s mother was in hospital, after a life-threatening accident. The promise would keep her mother safe, but put Elena’s own life at risk, instead, when she grew up and turned thirty. Elena put the promise to the back of her mind, over the years. But she’s twenty-nine now, and when something happens that puts her life in danger, she remembers. And she knows. But Elena hasn’t done everything yet. She’s not brave like her daredevil friend Rory. But she’s also not ready to give up on life. Not before she’s been to Paris. She always wanted to skydive too. She’s never even fallen in love. Without the promise of tomorrow, can she fulfil all her dreams before fate comes for her? A completely unexpecting, romantic uplifting story, about friendship, love, and fate, perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes, David Nicholls and Faith Hogan.
