The Perfect Neighbour- Susanna Beard-psychological thriller
The Perfect Neighbour- Susanna Beard-psychological thriller
Beth has moved into a new house and wants to make friends and meet the
neighbours. Most however seem to keep themselves to themselves and hide
behind their large hedges. Next door appears to have very tight security and
even from the front the house can hardly be seen. Three years earlier Sofia
begged her parents to let her come to England to fruit pick and where she
could be near her friend who had moved here. On arrival Sofias passport was
taken away, she was thrown into the back of a van and since then has been
kept prisoner being made to work for no pay and even having to steal what
little food she can. Beth's family decide to get a dog, but when Ruff scarpers
through the fence, Beth is horrified- not only at Ruff escaping but at what
she sees.
This is a brilliant read- one to highlight trafficking and modern day slavery.
Beth tries her best to do the right thing but with little evidence the police
have little to go on until she can find more. I loved how the Salvation
Army get involved- I have a connection to this from way back and appreciate
the work they do. You can’t help but be moved by the plight of Sofia and
how she is treated- yes fiction in this case but something that very much
exists in real life.
A wonderful enjoyable informative read with a message or two. We
never know what is going on behind closed doors and curiosity
sometimes may well save the cat!
