Crime in the Crypt

Crime in the Crypt by Catherine Moloney- Crime

A woman is found dead in a religious house- the Therisan club. The house is

dedicated to research into St Therese who apparently was quite a humble

soul. The only people around are all deeply religious. What reason could

they have for murder? When there is another death deep in the crypt,

detectives Markham and Noakes have rather a mystery on their hands and

have to be careful about what they say with religious ears around the

place. Noakes surprisingly takes quite an interest in the religious relics and

history. This is number 14 in the series but will happily stand alone- I’ve

only read a couple  of the others. This has a lot of background on St

Therese which some may find interesting, others maybe not so much.

Some is pertinent to the case , the rest is historical background which

for me was a little long albeit quite interesting. I like Markham and

Noakes as there is a good camaraderie between them and a little

humour to bring out their personalities- however in this one due to

the surroundings things were a little more muted than usual.

An interesting, entertaining read.

Crime in the Crypt by Catherine Moloney A THRILLING CRIME MYSTERY WITH AN ENDING YOU WON’T SEE COMING. Ten residents. One killer. A secret that won’t stay buried. Hostel, haven, Catholic retreat — there’s no place like London’s elegant Theresian Club. Dowdy receptionist Julia Porter checked in years ago, and now she’ll never leave. She is found strangled to death with her own tights, in her own room. The kicker? She welcomed her killer in like a friend. Detectives Markham and Noakes are on the case, and they know an inside job when they see one. Then the Club priest turns up dead. He was alone in the basement library when the killer struck. What was he doing down there in the night? It’s up to Markham and Noakes to find out before the body count rises again. THE DETECTIVES DI GILBERT (“GIL”) MARKHAM DI Markham is a startlingly talented detective rising through the ranks of Bromgrove CID. He is distant and austere — the product of a profoundly difficult childhood — but has a natural magnetism which inspires loyalty. He clashes with his slippery boss, DCI Sidney, who prioritizes the force’s public image. DS GEORGE (“NOAKESY”) NOAKES DS Noakes is a slobbish, uncouth and outspoken Yorkshireman, an object of despair to his superiors. He is, however, also a man of hidden depths, with a sensitive streak and a secret flair for ballroom dancing. Markham sees through his philistinism and they form an unstoppable partnership.
