The House of Mystery by Joy Ellis- Crime

A young boy is missing and DCI Bob Foreman and his team have little to go on other than he was seen with another boy with a limp- someone they have yet failed to find. The Surrey healing centre deals with the unusual. Each of the staff members has a special gift. Some can see aura’s, others even the dead occasionally, some have synaesthesia and all have found they know there is something brewing- something they have experience of. A boy of five is brought to them who is drawing like an aircraft engineer and speaks as if he has flown the ones in his pictures. Another wants to write a book but due to his age can't get the words down. When he dictates to them it is as if he is a mature adult. What is going on and why?

This follows on from Joy’s two other novels with the same characters, A Colour of Mystery and An Aura of Mystery. It would probably stand alone, however I more than thoroughly enjoyed the other two so why miss out? It is a crime novel with a different surrounding scenario to the norm, which for me makes them very special. Its fantasy (or is it?) mixed with mystery proving a heady mix. A very different and interesting read. Stunning.

  Murder under the Sun by Faith Martin - Crime This is one in a series but happily stands alone (book #22 in the Hillary Greene series) Hillary works with a cold case unit. She is a retired DI but couldn't stay away and her clean up score was second to none so going back over old cases and finding new leads is natural to her. Fifteen years ago a woman, a former model, was found dead at her home by her daughter, then aged seventeen. It transpired she was having an affair but despite several leads at the time, the police couldn't pin the crime on anyone. Hilary's team is now tasked with solving the case. I adore this series. There’s always a stunning plot and the odd light-hearted moment. Puff the tragic wagon makes a few appearances  which I smile at every time. Hillary is a very likeable, determined character who has the knack of seeing things in people others can’t. It's clever , twisty, intriguing  and a wonderful ending.   The House of Lies by Anita Waller Jess’s husband is terminal and is in his last few hours. For over twenty five years Jess has waited for an opportunity to tell Chris what she knows and now is that time. She has a journal of what has gone on including her revenge, but this needs telling in person. Chris was one of four men who met twice a week to play golf and hence were a close knit group. After Chris passes away, one of the other men is murdered. Is this about the group and can Jess keep her secret? OMG. Another one of Anita’s books that I couldn't put down. Grudges can be held for many years, and revenge is a dish best served cold as we all know. This takes this premise, very cleverly and spins it. It's gritty and brilliantly crafted and I didn't quite know what was likely to come next- just how I like it.
