 The Sunflower Field by Anita Waller 

Oh wow! A book that starts as a domestic drama and turns into something more- so much more. One I really couldn’t put down. Alice has announced to her boyfriend Dom, that she is pregnant, having set the scene with a nice meal, candles etc. Dominic turns on her and beats her trying to cause her to abort the unborn child. Alice survives as do the twins it is found she is carrying, but she doesn't want to press charges knowing that there would be severe retaliations so moves into her mothers house where her aunt also lives and ups the security. Suddenly there is a major shift in a family drama, one that took me by surprise , so cleverly crafted and kept me immersed. This really was one of those “ just one more chapter” reads- I was truly hooked.

A scintillating read by a master of the hook and drama. It made me smile and wince and pretty much every emotion therein. Wonderfully thought out with lots of human touches to make this so realistic and that feeling of care in some of the characters, you feel you could know them.

A magnificent work, one I more than highly recommend- only don’t try to get anything else done once you’ve started it!

  The Cyclist- Tim Sullivan- Crime This is the second in the DS Cross books but happily stands alone. There has been a body found when demolishing some buildings, a body wrapped in plastic. It turns out to be that of a young man who was very keen on cycling and should have been going abroad for a race when a strange text was sent from his phone. It turns out his life was slightly more complex than first thought which leads the team through a few dead ends and the reader through twists and turns. A very interesting plot line, and one very cleverly thought out. For anyone not having come across George Cross before- he is a wonderful character with a tendency to intricate detail and not for social niceties. He is fortunate in having an understanding partner of DS Ottey who is doing her best not only with him to get another partner.   The Murder at Worlds End by Ross Montgomery - Crime Stephen Pike arrives at Tithe Hall to take up a new position which he desperately needs- he is destitute and has somewhat of a history. On arrival he finds no such position but fortuitously they need more staff, especially as they are shutting out the world for safety due to the passing of the comet. This is 1910 and the rich out power the scientists in what they believe and what they would have their household believe. However the woman who wrote the letter getting Stephen employment, Decima, has her own thoughts and plans. When there is a murder the night of the comet when everyone has been locked in their rooms, the two try to discover who the culprit is.  This is my first foray into Mr Montgomery’s work and won't be the last- I loved it.   The Murder List by Jackie Kabler -psychological thriller  Mary is a crime writer, freelance and rents office space with some other self employed people. Her father who tragically died in a fire where Mary survived was a famous crime novelist. Amongst her Christmas gifts is a diary, which she assumes is from one of the publishers she works for. She doesn't open it until january as she doesnt use a paper diary, and finds some chilling entries- “ murder Lisa Oxford 1st Jan” and 3 others on different dates. The first date has already passed and a woman named Lisa has been found dead. She takes her finding to the police and she decides to do a little investigative work for herself. A crime piece that has fallen into her hands and not least of all as she may be the last name on the list. I quickly got into this and felt for Mary’s predicament.
