The Absurd Life of Barry White by Rob Harris

I was recommended this by a friend (thanks Trish!) and very glad I was. It's a wonderful book that brings a smile and a dose of life in all its facets. Barry is lazy, overweight and drinks far far more in a night than he should in a month. His mother has facilitated this by spoiling him for all his 44 years and it takes a few short sharp shocks for him to realise he is still in essence a child, having everything done for him. He gambles obsessively and hardly ever wins… until he does and this is the catalyst for his life changes.

I smiled and I winced and I felt for Barry in many ways. His heart was always in the right place and this makes for a very entertaining read. A person we could all learn lessons from. Be kind, be thoughtful, and be selfless. A light brilliantly entertaining read with wonderful characters, I more than thoroughly enjoyed.

Monte Carlo is full of people wanting to impress in every way possible. £30,000 for a bottle of brandy isn't unheard of in this tongue in cheek tale. Think “ the real housewives of Monte Carlo” but not! There is betrayal and subterfuge, and beneath the banner of a book club there is plotting going on as a small group of women have had enough. However planning doesn’t stay on course and the women have to think on their feet- something they aren't quite used to. A book to be taken lightly and one with a smile but apparently based on true events! . Of the ups and downs of the millionaire lifestyle. This would make a good holiday read, one to bring a laugh. Andorra Pett and the Oort Cloud- Cafe- Richard Dee-  4* Andi has landed on a mining station a week away from Mars. She takes on the “ucky strike cafe” (the “L” fell off) - its previous owner having disappeared leaving outstanding debts. Her business partner Cy is right behind her. Much to her surprise they find the previous guy in the freezer - in a body bag. Being on a different planet means there are rules about refuse and hence they decide to leave him there having little choice in the matter. Andi wants to find out more about a secret book that he had and who murdered him. This is a wonderful, lighthearted read to make you smile. Characters that are well portrayed and you take to easily. Descriptions are vivid and you can easily picture “the planet” in your minds eye. An excellent plot line with a little humour and even romance along the way. A highly enjoyable read.
