Behind The Seams

Behind The Seams- Esme Young- autobiography

I'm not really a sewer but have mended and done the odd adjustment. The Sewing Bee drew me in as it was fascinating, the skill of the contestants quite something. I loved Esme from when she first appeared as she had that certain something, the wherewithal of someone who has been around the block and can spot a mistake from three fields away! When I learnt of the book it had to be on my Christmas list and didn't disappoint. Its Esme's life story- how she found fashion and probably more like how it found her, having done graphic design as her main subject. Yes there are the occasional names thrown in- but go girl! Throw them and be proud! . In an unforgiving industry when you are asked to make clothes for a someone then be justifiably proud. A story of a very hard working lady whom I admire. Her tenacity and determination are admirable. Loved it.

The Librarian

THE LIBRARIAN by Stewart Giles- Crime

There's a serial killer on the loose and DS’ Smith and Whitton recognise some of the scenes. They are copies of some of the cases they have investigated, some being rather too close to home for comfort. When a young woman is killed an elderly lady asks to see Smith. She has hyperthymesia- a special sort of memory- and instantly recognises this as a copy of an earlier murder just from the news reports. She used to be a librarian and her house is testament to this, containing a staggering number of books and a couple of hairy friends for company! Smith thinks she could be just the resource they are looking for.

I love Stewarts books and devour them only to be disappointed that I get to the end- I really don’t want them to finish despite wanting to know what happens- argh! There's a warmth of characters despite the situation they find themselves in. They come across as if they are neighbours and friends. That said I really wouldn't want to live too close to Jason Smith- there are far to many murders around! Lol! Emily, new to this book, is a real treasure.  Always a very well thought out plot which has twists and turns which I love, and which throws the reader a curve ball or two along the way. A stunning, captivating read.

THE LIBRARIAN (Detective Jason Smith book 20)

From bestselling author: Stewart Giles comes another brilliant addition to the Detective Jason Smith series

The Librarian (Detective Jason Smith #20) by Stewart Giles

Detective Jason Smith has outwitted more murderers than he cares to admit. His insight into the criminal mind is unrivaled and he's made a career out of outsmarting the depraved and insane killers that have plagued the city of York.

But it appears someone has been doing some research on Smith's track record. Somebody knows more than they ought to, and when people are murdered in circumstances, far too familiar to be coincidence, Smith runs out of ideas.

The answers to his questions come from an unexpected source. An octogenarian former Librarian who claims to remember everything that has ever happened in her waking life, will prove to be an unusual ally in Smith's quest to bring down the most disturbing killer he's ever come across.

What readers are saying about The Librarian:

Every chapter is like navigating a terrifying, haunted circus hall of mirrors maze. Hair-raising suspense explodes leading to a dynamite chilling conclusion.. Lena

What a twisted minded read. I was all over the place reading every chapter.

Superb once again from Stewart Giles the master of writing at his best, simply the best. 5 stars..Booklover Bev

This is an entertaining, engaging read. A murder, mystery in itself with multiple murders and a serial killer. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so that I am now going to reread the previous books in the series..Carol

Stewart Giles – Author Bio

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.
In 2014 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.
3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series - the DC Harriet Taylor: Cornwall series.
The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.
I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results.  I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series which was published in July 2018.
After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brought together the broody, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor.
The Miranda trilogy is something totally different. A psychological thriller trilogy. It is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before.
The Detective Jason Smith series continues to grow. I also have another series featuring an Irish detective who relocated to Guernsey, the Detective Liam O’Reilly series. There are also 3 stand alone novels.

My books of the year 2022

********************My books of the year 2022****************
These are my top reads of the year in the order I read them. Those that achieved my 5** rating- the ones that touched me or blew me away for one reason or another. These are around 7% of the total reads.
1. Little Viking Horse by Catherine Holland Bax- Childrens
Although a children's book I believe adults will enjoy it too. We all can learn a little about the magic of animals and that special bond that there can be between us and them.
Nicki's book blog (nickibookblog.blogspot.com)

2. You only Live Thrice- Karl Perry- Autobiography/medical bio

Oh wow! A book of hope amid despair, of humour and of making the most of things. My mantra has always been “ one life- live it” which this reflects so much. I may well re-read this when I need a tonic. I laughed, I cried, I loved it (can you tell?) :)  “ Smile my boy, its Sunrise”

Nicki's book blog: You Only Live Thrice (nickibookblog.blogspot.com)

3. The Right Words- Donna Ashworth- Poety/Inspirational

A friend bought me this as Im going through something currently which she totally gets. Donna writes " let the book decide which page you need to read today, its rather good at that" Sceptical? Oh boy! After a tough day of dealing with things Id rather not talk about, the book found the right pages for me. So much so it blew me away. Someone " got me"- my feelings and emotions, thoughts and doubts and so much more.

Nicki's book blog (nickibookblog.blogspot.com)

4. - The Sturmtaucher Trilogy By Alan Jones- WW2 (The Gathering Storm, Flight of the ShearwaterThe Turn of the Tide ** BOOK OF THE YEAR **********

I have so loved this trilogy for several reasons. It's fiction but so well interspersed with facts and excellent research that at times I had to remind myself it truly was fiction. That many of those facts were hidden as part of the great German propaganda now seem a lifetime away and yet we still hear of horrors in different parts of the world and still of a propaganda machine elsewhere sadly. I can't say how much I recommend this- it’s more of an experience than “just” a book, one that gives so much right the way through. A stunning piece of writing and research, a wonderful multi plot line and characters to remember in all sorts of ways.

5. How To Save A Life (now called The Night We First Met) by Clare Swatman-women's fiction

I love Clare’s books- they quickly envelop you like a warm blanket and that favourite pair of slippers. There's a wonderful depth of characters that quickly comes across and a mystery that keeps the pages turning. It's hard to describe the warmth of these books. Each one is simply stunning and makes you think about life a little, treasuring the little things and thinking about always being kind. That one small gesture from you could have far reaching consequences you never thought possible.

6. Open your Eyes- Heather J Fitt-  psychological thriller
OMG! I genuinely couldn't put this down- its so well written and gripping I wanted to race through the whole thing (real life got in the way unfortunately ). I took to Frankie and this opened my eyes to what sadly is out there on something I knew nothing about. Yes this is fiction but things like this do exist (look up incel - wiki is a good source) and many murders have been committed through this. A well researched, stunningly written novel

7. Venus was her name- Patricia Dixon - contemporary fiction
Oh wow! The read of the summer- stunning and beautiful,I smiled and I cried. A treasure, a gift and of a talented author- this is so beautifully written. I could picture Edie and some of her scenes with Joe and Ace which made my heart smile and ache accordingly. One of hope and dreams, highs and lows and how sometimes what you thought was buried deep may cast longer shadows than you ever imagined. A truly magnificent read to remember.

8. Mad Honey- Jodi Picoult & Jennifer Finney Boylan-Literary Fiction

A book about life and what it may throw at us and of being who we truly are, not restrained by others or popular thought. Of learning from those little winged creatures who are always one step ahead of us humans and of life that can give us a real buzz both good and bad. A brave, beautiful, powerful stunner of a read. Nicki's book blog: Search results for mad honey (nickibookblog.blogspot.com)

9. Olive, Mabel and Me- Andrew Cotter

The love and companionship of a species so amazing in so many ways. I laughed out loud ( sorry next door caravan) and I shed a tear but was left with my heart bursting at the love Ive been so lucky to receive from my faithful friends. 10* if I could (and a sausage to Olive and Mabel). Maybe a pat to Mr Cotter too .

10. The Lightning Rod- Tony Forder- crime
OMG. I'm in awe of Tony and his mindset. The initial scenes are so well thought out and written so the reader can understand them easily. The thinking behind them however is mind blowing and it's as if Tony was sitting in on several meetings taking notes as to who thought and said what. This isn't a straightforward case as you can tell from above, but so meticulously told and crafted it has taken a special sort of brain to even think of it, let alone put it down on paper! A truly wonderful story that I didn’t want to end. I’d love to hug Jimmy (and Tony if he’d let me) for the warmth that shines through every one of these books. A stunning, gripping, real page turner. 10* if I could.

11, SOLACE HOUSE by Joy Ellis- Crime
Oh I so love Joy’s books. There is a warmth of storytelling and characters from a master of words and so much more. I almost race through wanting to find out what happens and at the same time not wanting it to end. I can't help but love Jackman and Marie as they have the tenacity and determination whilst maintaining that emotive, empathetic side of human nature. A twist towards the end that stopped me in my tracks and a story that left me reeling thinking wow!. One stunning read.

12. Canaries in the Coalmine- Ross Greenwood- Crime

OMG.  A book that stopped me in my tracks (in a very good way). Yes it's a crime book but it's so very much more. It's about understanding our fellow humans whatever they are or choose to be or what they have been through. Of love and understanding and most of all caring. Trevor made me cry at the end, and yes as Ross says afterwards we’ve perhaps all known a Trevor in our time. One of my books of the year, this really is something so special I don’t have adequate words to describe it.

13.The Charity Shop Detective Agency by Peter Boland- Cosy Crime

This is such a clever and well thought out concept. Three ladies seemingly inconspicuous because of their age get up to all sorts of antics to solve the increasing murder rate. I've read the Richard Osman ones and this one for me is better, I smiled more, and the characters come alive so well. There are twists and turns and red herrings and a wonderful dog by the name of Simon LeBon! I really didn't want this to end.

A Gift Called Hope

A Gift Called Hope - Eva Jordan- Women's Fiction

I bought this having been attracted to the cover and the title, I needed a little hope as perhaps do we all at times. I've read Eva's books before so was hoping I would enjoy it as much as the others and I wasn't disappointed. Its a story of Jill who lives with her young grandson Jack junior after his father has passed away and his mother is unable to cope. Her own marriage to Jack senior broke down following the tragedy. Jill has tried to make a new life by moving away and doing something she always wanted to do- a food van- which has given her a new lease of life and new friends through the interaction with her customers. When Jack Juniors mother appears back on the scene, Jill worries that she isn't good for Jack junior and blames her for the death of her son.

Eva has a rare skill of writing. Yes its a story but there is much philosophy woven through the pages which we can all learn from. I found myself stopping at certain points as the odd phrase hit me in the face of poignancy. Its a story of rising from the ashes and looking forward having perhaps learnt from the past. Although the cover indicates a seasonal read it really could be read at anytime of year . Of day and night and light and dark, of loss and of new beginnings. Carpe diem all the way!

Smith

Smith- Stewart Giles -Crime

Oh what a read! this is the first in the DS Smith series, one I joined part way through and am now catching up. Its a stunner of a read and gives us Smith's background beginning in Australia and losing his sister. Smith and DC Whitton and team have a case of murder where Smith is convinced that the man in the spotlight is innocent but doesn't quite know how to go about proving it. We learn of his talent for his guitars and the beginning of his relationship with Whitton and of course Theakston!

A wonderful captivating read by a very talented author. I love Stewart's books- there is always a comfort about them despite the subject matter, of a warmth of characters and a plot that draws the reader in very quickly. Smith is almost a friend if that makes sense- he's someone you know you could rely on but heaven help you if you get on the wrong side of him. A wonderfully entertaining 5* read. I'm off to start the next one!

Bad Blood

Bad Blood - Sadie Ryan -Crime

Sean is visiting his rather wayward brother in the USA who hates him as their father left his house to Sean only. Sean and his wife both work at the local GP practice. One of the local police nips to some bushes for an urgent call of nature and discovers more than he anticipated- a body. It is later discovered that the marks on this are similar to those on another woman who was found several months ago. Frances is finally going to meet the man she has been chatting to on Tinder. She has found herself quite lonely and the man says he is quite famous and divorcing his wife so not to say anything to anyone about it lest it leak out. Her friend warns her about what he could be like but Frances isn't having any of it and takes the afternoon of work to get ready. When her friend returns from a few days away and Frances is nowhere to be found warning bells start ringing and she does her best to convince the police that Frances really has gone missing. Who could be taking these women and why?

This is a stunning read and my first by this author. It's a very cleverly thought-out plot and well crafted. It comes across well and the pages turn very easily. There are twists and turns and I found myself trying to work out the who’s and why’s but then another one spun me around. A well written book where chapters alternate between the police and in parts domestic chatter (all very relevant) of either Sean and his wife or others. A thrilling, captivating read, and I look forward to more in the series.

The Charity Shop Detective Agency

The Charity Shop Detective Agency by Peter Boland- Cosy Crime

One of my books of the year 10* if I could. On arriving at the charity shop where she works Fiona sees her rival Sophie from the cat's protection shop across the road putting a box of donations on their ever-burgeoning pile outside her own shop. On a closer inspection she sees a knife covered in what looks like blood. She calls the police who take it and the box away for closer examination. When someone they know is later found dead by her delivery man, Fiona and her friends get into action to bring the perpetrator to justice and so the charity shop detective agency is born.

I sincerely hope that this will be the first of a series- if so sign me up now! Love Fiona, Partial Sue and Daisy. A charming, wonderfully entertaining read I absolutely loved.

THE CHARITY SHOP DETECTIVE AGENCY by Peter Boland PUT THE KETTLE ON AND DISCOVER AN UTTERLY CHARMING NEW COZY MURDER MYSTERY SET IN A SLEEPY SEASIDE TOWN. A serial killer is stalking the elderly of Southbourne. The only clue left behind is a domino in the hand of each victim — with a name scratched on the back. Eighty-six-year-old Sarah Brown is found dead in her hallway one morning by her delivery man. She was stabbed in the back. Fiona, Sue and Daisy, volunteers at the local charity shop, Dogs Need Nice Homes, can’t believe their favourite customer is dead. The ladies vow to bring the killer to justice. With plenty of tea and cake along the way, and despite squabbles with their rivals, the Cats Alliance across the street, the Charity Shop Detective Agency is born. Fans of The Thursday Murder Club, Janice Hallett, Simon Brett, Ian Moore and Sarah Yarwood-Lovett will adore this exciting new voice in cozy crime. THE DETECTIVE Level-headed Fiona has found a quiet sanctuary volunteering at the local charity shop, Dogs Need Nice Homes. And she’s found firm friendship with the strong-willed Partial Sue (she’s ever so partial to a cup of tea) and the kindly — and surprisingly tech-savvy — Daisy. Together, these ladies, with Simon Le Bon, Fiona’s scruffy haired terrier cross, investigate murders as the utterly charming Charity Shop Detective Agency.

PETER BOLAND After studying to be an architect, Pete realised he wasn’t very good at it. He liked designing buildings, he just couldn’t make them stand up — a big handicap in an industry that’s partial to keeping things upright. So he became an advertising copywriter, the highlight of which was creating an ad featuring Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman. He then tried his hand at writing his own stories and quickly realised there’s no magic formula. You just have to put one word in front of the other (and keep doing that for about six months). It also helps if you can resist the lure of surfing and drinking beer in a garden chair. The first book in his Charity Shop Detective Agency series will publish in late 2022. Graves on the Fen

Graves on the Fen- Joy Ellis- Crime

DI Nikki Galena has received a letter “Par Avion” which is rather a blast from the past. In it contains a short but chilling message “You failed me”. What on earth? When a second letter arrives with the name of four local missing women who were never found things are only slightly clearer as Nikki wasn't involved in any of the cases. They are then sent pictures of a “crime scene” containing bones. Meanwhile Nikkis birth mother is out metal detecting and ends up doing what she does best- even more detective work. Who is behind the letters and why target Nikki?

I so love Joy’s books; they are a treasure and an honour to read. The characters come across as old friends and a plot so well thought out. A carefully thought-out scenario set in the Lincolnshire fens where the fields go on for miles and there is little unnatural light or even inhabitants in places. A truly wonderful read that kept me engrossed. I really can't get enough of Joy’s books. Nuff said!

-------------------------------

GRAVES ON THE FENS by Joy Ellis FROM TWO-MILLION-SELLING AUTHOR JOY ELLIS COMES ONE OF THE MOST KEENLY ANTICIPATED MYSTERIES THIS YEAR. It arrives in the morning. An old-fashioned airmail envelope addressed to Detective Nikki Galena. Inside, on a single sheet of blue airmail paper, are three words: You failed me. The second airmail envelope arrives at Nikki’s home address. The same message. Only this time, it’s followed by four names: Alexandra Cornfield, Ruth Baker, Bethany Lyons, Leanne Delaney. Four missing women. Four local women whose bodies were never found. The contents of the third letter, delivered by motorcycle courier, are even more disturbing. The letter leads directly to the discovery of a body buried in a shallow grave out on the Fens. And Nikki and her partner Detective Joseph Easter are plunged into a baffling murder investigation. Someone appears to be pursuing a personal vendetta against Nikki— and she has no idea who, or why. But one thing she does know: whoever it is is playing a very twisted game — and if Nikki and her team don’t stop them, more deaths will follow. GRIPPING FROM BEGINNING TO STUNNING CONCLUSION. Joy Ellis was nominated for Crime and Thriller Book of the Year at the British Book Awards 2021 for The Patient Man. This totally gripping mystery is perfect for fans of L.J. Ross, Peter May, J.D. Kirk, Angela Marsons, J.M. Dalgliesh, Elly Griffiths or Ann Cleeves. What readers are saying about Joy Ellis:  “Just wonderful to read.” Carole  “Riveting tale from start to finish.” Lynne “Holds the reader’s attention from the first word to the last.” Nicki R. “Compulsive reading, I loved it.” Viv “Absolutely engrossing.” Olga “Brilliant book which kept me gripped from page 1.” Barbara THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals and has a sharp tongue on occasion, but she’s fiercely loyal to her team. THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen. DISCOVER YOUR NEXT FAVOURITE MYSTERY SERIES NOW.
