Worst Case Scenario by Helen Fitzgerald-Psychological thriller
Mary is a criminal-justice social worker. From prostitution to paedophiles and everything in
between. Life is starting to get to her. When she has 41 hours accumulated on her flexi time
that she has to use by the end of the month- oh wait- that’s today, she begins to think enough
is enough. She has seen it all over the years but now someone else has written the book and
is wearing the t shirt. One of her last cases is that of a man who killed his wife. He has written
a book of letters to his dead wife that on his release day has been published. This of course
causes a stir amongst the media and Mary is left to pick up the pieces. Her son tags along
to the launch and she is horrified when a few days later she finds him hooked up with the
daughter of the author/criminal. This is a very different read and an interesting one. I know
there may be artistic licence but excellent research has been done into the whys and
wherefores of a social workers diary and life. In places this is rather a dark, raw read
(nothing to put you off your dinner or scare you) just about lives on the edge and talk
of sex and exploits. A book to remember.

Mary Shields is a moody, acerbic probation offer, dealing with some of Glasgow’s worst cases, and her job is on the line.
Liam Macdowall was imprisoned for murdering his wife, and he’s published a series of letters to the dead woman, in a book that makes him an unlikely hero – and a poster boy for Men’s Rights activists.

Liam is released on licence into Mary’s care, but things are far from simple. Mary develops a poisonous obsession with Liam and his world, and when her son and Liam’s daughter form a relationship, Mary will stop at nothing to impose her own brand of justice … with devastating consequences.

A heart-pounding, relentless and chilling psychological thriller, rich with deliciously dark and unapologetic humour, Worst Case Scenario is also a perceptive, tragic and hugely relevant book by one of the most exciting names in crime fiction.--
