Liars- Patricia Dixon and Anita Waller-Psychological thriller
Nell and Wendy have been friends for almost ever- well at least that’s what it feels
like. Nell has taken herself off travelling and Wendy is now married to Mike who is
a little older than her. The two friends write to each other (this is before mobiles
and email) and the letters tell each other of their lives until one of them doesn’t
(bear with me it will make sense).  Unknown to Wendy, Nell had an unpleasant
encounter with Mike when she was once working at a bar. Lets just say”Desert
disease”. Mike has never welcomed Nell to their home and appears to have
pushed all of Wendy’s friends away too. When Wendy accidentally becomes
pregnant Nell hopes that she will have some support. Wendy has quickly found
that Mike has another side- one of a controlling, violent husband who expects
her to be at his beck and call and do exactly what he says, no excuses. This is
the part she hasn’t told Nell. For anyone who has had someone this controlling
in their lives they will understand that they don’t even have to be there to exert
control. Fear and indoctrination fill in the gaps. Oh wow! So very well described,
each emotion and feeling is tangible on the page. I liked Nell and felt for Wendy
but we learnt early on about her own defence mechanisms. Two friends but two
very different people at times, each both sides of a coin but one never losing
sight of what truly  matters. A story of love and friendships, of presumptions
and lies. I smiled and I cried. Stunning doesn’t do this justice 10* if I could.
