The Good Child

The Good Child By Charlotte Barnes- psychological thriller

Two mothers met at a clinic when they were expecting and have remained friends ever since as have the two children, in fact the children are now far more than friends. When Ryan is found dead both families are devastated. Annie has raised Jessica alone since her husband died in an accident ten years ago and she is pleased that she has found a friend and confidant in Ryan, the son of Kaleb and Freya. Annie starts to find out more about her daughter than she ever imagined and also that Ryan wasn't the person most people thought he was. Who has killed Ryan and why?

Charlotte has the skill of cleverly drawing the reader in quickly and keeping them wrapped between the pages. There’s a chill, an uncertainty, that tension you can’t quite put your finger on but it's there and keeps the pages turning. That feeling of “ just one more chapter” shows to me the flow of a book and the expertise of the author. I liked Annie who came across as the most grounded perhaps as she was the most central character to the whole thing. A clever concept, brilliantly executed and a surprising one. I won’t give anything away- just to say expect the unexpected! A stunning read I loved.
