The Couple Upstairs by Shalini Boland- psychological thriller
Nina and her boyfriend Zac are just moving into a flat that they have
purchased. They have been together five years and feel the time is
right to stop renting and put down some roots for the future. Zac is
self-employed as a plumber and Nina has her own fashion business
funded by a local entrepreneur who has a manager James who
keeps an eye on things. On moving in the neighbours all appear friendly.
The couple upstairs Chris and Vanessa appear with a bottle and cake
to welcome Nina and Zac. The next day both of them are unwell and
wonder if it's a bug going around or something that they ate. Nina hears
Chris frequently shouting and what sounds like furniture moving however
Vanessa is very quiet and says very little and won’t be drawn.Nina
holds a product party to further her business and when the lights
go out and a broken switch is found, she wonders if someone is
against her. Alternate chapters tell of a child, we know not who, t
hat lost their father quite young and then finding reassurance in
a friend called Adam.
As ever with Shalini’s books I found myself oblivious to real life and
turning and turning and turning. To me the sign of a very skilled and
talented writer that can hold the reader within the pages and keep
them there. An air of tension and twists and just as you think you
might have a clue- bang! and there's another twist in the opposite
direction.
A brilliant , stunner of a read with a warning- real life may get in the way!

All our friends and family were gathered, glasses raised to toast our fresh start. It should have been a night for happiness and celebration. Zac and I had worked so hard for this: our first home together, just minutes from the sea. But the dream quickly turned into a nightmare…
We’d invited our neighbours too. I wanted to make a good impression – to show them we’re exactly the sort of people they want living on their street.
I hadn’t thought about who they might be, the strangers I was letting in.
It was going so well. There was laughter in the air and the wine was flowing. But then I noticed the narrowed eyes, the whispers.
And then the lights went out.
As my heart thumped in my chest, all the little things that had been going wrong since we moved here flashed through my mind: the food poisoning, the arguments, the flood of nasty reviews shaking my business.
Am I going crazy? Or is someone trying to destroy us?
From the USA Today bestselling author Shalini Boland comes an absolutely heart-thumping psychological thriller with a twist you won’t see coming. Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl and The Wife Between Us.
