BEFORE I TRUST YOU Daisy White
Ruby and Mary live above the hairdressers that they work in. This is Brighton 1965.
They treat themselves to a day at the races and are horrified when a young woman
apparently throws herself in front of the horses in the style of the suffragettes. Is this
an act of suicide or is there more to it. Ruby was very close to the railings when it
happened and she can’t get the images out of her mind. It’s sometimes hard to pictures
how different things were in that time. Not only no mobile phones but very few homes
even had a landline- telephone boxes were the norm. Ruby and Mary’s boss Johnny
is gay- something that wasn’t legalised for another four years. Detective work and
forensics were very basic- fingerprinting just about existed. This makes for an
interesting read as to how things were done differently and how people lived and
managed in what we now see as such basic times. A man is murdered and a horse
is stolen. Are the three incidents connected and if so - how? I enjoyed this, a delve
into the past (and no , I can’t remember that far back!) and of a more sedate way
of life. A steady, easy read.
