The Dead Wife- Sue Fortin-Crime/psychological
Steph works independently for a travel journal after her university course in
journalism. She is going on an all expenses paid trip to a resort which is having
a grand re-opening.The resort belongs to the Sinclair family, comprising of a
mother and her three sons. She tweets about it in order to raise her profile and
is astonished when she receives a message asking her to look into the death of
one of the wives of the owners of the resort. Even more so when she finds the
investigating officer was no-one other than her own mother- a former DCI.
The verdict has been that Elizabeth Sinclair drowned two years beforehand after
trying to save her pet dog- something her mother Sonia who sent the message
to Steph doesn’t agree with. Everyone else agrees it was an accidental tragedy
and that Sonia is slightly unhinged with it all. Steph however isn’t put off and
wants to find out more about what really happened. We get occasional
chapters from two years ago in the lead up to Elizabeth’s death and what was
happening at the time. I liked Steph and admired her tenacity. There is an air
of mystery about this (as there should be!) but done in a very clever way.
You know someone is hiding facts and may even suspect the culprit but then
again may change your mind! A family that sticks together and defends each
other with the funds to get rid of most issues. A clever plot (and I didn’t work
out who the perpetrator was), likeable characters, a touch of humour and a
touch of romance.
A highly enjoyable read that kept me turning and wanting more.
