The Girl In The Tunnel by Deirdre Palmer -psychological suspense

Ellen is on her way home when she sees a familiar face waiting for a tube. Her

sister is in a relationship with a married man- Matt. Ellen verbally lashes out

at him and then suddenly he is gone. Ellen panics and fears the worst especially

when her sister doesn't hear from Matt, despite Rosanne telling her this is

perfectly normal as he has to be careful due to the likelihood of his wife finding

out. Ellen finds a friend in Carl whom she meets when she sleeps rough for

a while in a disused underground station (the tunnel from the title). She has

been getting sinister messages and longs to escape from the pressure and

being around no-one is her only mental escape. Carl is the good samaritan

and helps Ellen. He sets out to find Matt to prove to Ellen that the worst

hasn’t happened despite what she thinks- trouble is he can’t find him.

I really enjoyed this- it's a slightly different read in that it's mostly what might

have happened- nothing to make you on edge as I find with some

psychological thrillers making it a wonderful easy read. I like Ellen and Carl

and understood Ellen’s reticence at ebing out and about. When something

is in your head it can take over everything if you let it. A clever, well

constructed, very enjoyable read

Carl Teviot is convinced Ellen isn’t a killer, even though he’s only just met her – or rather, found her, huddled in a sleeping bag in an abandoned Tube station: a ghost station. Author Bio – Deirdre lives in Brighton, on the south coast of England. She writes women’s and psychological fiction under her own name, and as Zara Thorne. Becoming an author was a childhood dream, although she didn’t have much of a clue as to what it meant. But fast forward several years – okay, many years – and the dream showed signs of becoming reality. She entered the Mail on Sunday Novel Competition, twice, and came fourth, twice. So there was the incentive to complete her first novel, Remarkable Things, which was published by Crooked Cat and shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association Joan Hessayon Award. The Girl in the Tunnel is Deirdre’s 14th book.
